Having trouble installing Java

When i tried to reinstal Java, after having to uninstal it because it wasn't working right, Windows installer gave me a message saying

Error applying transforms - verify that the specified transform paths are valid.

I installed the installer clean up but there isn't any java related programs to delete from there

i'm totally stumped as to why i can't get java to load

Try googling your error message.

This problem has troubled me for some time. I have tried the various recomended methods and uninstaller bits and pieces, but with no good effect.

Somehow though I discovered that during a failed install, an .msi file is installed in c:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Application Data\Sun\Java\jre(version number)\. When I ran this .msi file, the installation worked, and I haven't had the problem since.
