GP+Philips: How this industry is working

Hi,

I am just want to clear some of dobts about this card industry:)

As I know that the chip/card (SmartMX) is manufactored by Philips.

We are using GP for installing applications with ISD keys. Who installs Java Card runtime on these cards or chip?

Does Philips installs GP (security domain)on their card at manufactoring time?

If I have philips chip without GP than can I install application : because than i dont need authentication.....dont know what could be the business.

Now who is maintainig these keys?

And ya where the JCOP comes into picture?"somewhere I have read that if we failed in authenticating with card for n times that it gets locked and this velocity checking is maintained by JCOP"

SmartMX is a smart card chip manifactured by NXP (ex-Philips). It can be used for many different applications. One example is the Java Card commonly known as "JCOP41v2.2 on SmartMX". In this case, NXP licensed the JCOP operating system, which contains the JCRE and a GlobalPlatform implementation, and created a ROM mask. The ROM mask is used during chip production; that means that the JCOP operating system is etched into ROM when the chip is manufactured on the wafer. In other words, it's part of the chip.

Thanks very much for clearing doubts. Now what about the keys which we are using for authentication, it is JCOP default keys, so when we want to install application we are using those keys. Who is supposed to maintain these keys?

There is a process called personalisation. So if you have the CM keys (could be the default JCOP keys or some random keys), you can replace these keys --> control over who can e.g. install an application on the card.
