auto complete text component

Hi there ,I am developing auto complete text component using JSF.For that I am writing web.xml and faces-config.xml.Is it necessary to write xml description tags in the starting of the page.If i write this it is not deployed in to tomcat server .can anyone please help me .
I am just wondering how you implemented auto complete, did you use AJAX?
