Very noobie memory question.

I recently installed the firefox addon screengrab -http://andy.5263.org/screengrab/ and one of the things it requires is that i increase my java's memory size, however folowing thier faq leads me to a dead end. I have nothing like that in my control panal>advanced tab. Is there a way to do this from the console or something?

What Java related things do you have in your control panel?Does it work for any page? Can you try something very small to see if it ever works. It should work without this. If it doesn't it suggests another problem.

It works fine on small pages (about 3-4 real pages in length, I havent done a formal test) anything longer gives this error messege.

The faq says i should have a "Java Runtime Parameters field" (i expect its outdated) in advanced I have

settings

>debugging

>javaconsole

>applet tag support

>shortcyt reation

>jnlp file/mime assocation

>security

>miscelaneous

Of course ive checked under the sub-headings but no such luck. Under the regular java tab I do have 'java applet runtime settings' and 'java application runtime settings' but neither of these do anything when i click view.

Yes i dbl checked update, and I dont use java all that much so i doubt a reinstall is needed.

Which Java version? I have the tabsGeneral - Update - Java - Security - AdvancedAnd in Java, I have Applet Runtime Settings and Application Runtime Settings. Both have a view button, and the Applet Runtime Settings would allow me to specify parameters.Java 1.5.0_06

I went to the site you mentioned in your OP and downloaded the plugin. It

worked fine on, eg, this page but, sure enough when I tried to capture the

"andy" page, it failed as he said it would. (I got an error message about

security privileges)

So... I followed one of the links which suggested increasing the memory of

the java applet runtime settings.

In the Control Panel select Java, then in the third tab ("Java") in the top

section - Java Applet RuntimeSettings - click on the "View" button. I have two

JREs listed (1.5.0-06 and 1.6.0). In the "Java Runtime Parameters" fields at

the right hand end I added-Xmx500MThen, after OKing everything and restarting Firefox - I was able to sucessfully

capture the large "Andy" page.

This machine is XPpro SP 2 with 2Gb RAM. The resulting .png was 1.5Mb

and took quite a while (ie 5-10 seconds) to capture and save (I thought it had

killed Filefox!). Also I tried -Xmx1000M to begin with but the java plugin

wouldn't load at all with that setting.

Hope that helps.

Wish it did, but when I hit view, nothing opens :X

> when I hit view, nothing opens

Using FF 1.5.0.6 I invoke the plugin from the context menu on the page. (It

shows up as a submenu titled "ScreenGrab!"). I don't go anywhere near the

"View" menu.

Also - as I said - the error I was getting on big pages referred to a security

exception rather than "null", so maybe your problem is something else. Sorry.
