Jave installed but not enabled

Sorry, I'm sure this is a basic question, that I should be able to figure out myself, but hopefully someone will be able to assist me. I am trying to enable Java so that I can use/access programs that uses the Sun Java applet. I've gone to my control panel and see that it's on my computer. I've tried to re-download/intall it but it says I already have it even after removing it. I've done the "test" and it says that it's intstalled but not enabled. I've gone to Tools--internet options--Security--Custom-- there only seems to be a java option under scripting, but I've seen recommendations to make sure it's enabled in another section, but that isn't an option. I do not see the Java coffee cup logo in my control panel either and I can not access the Sun Java Console under tools either. It's there, but nothing happens when I click on it. Sorry so long, just trying to give some background into what I've already tried. Thanks for any help

I also have an hs_err file on my desktop that seems to be related.

What test ? Have you tried to use an applet from any other location ? And the java thing in the browser that you are talking about is most likely javascript, which althought it sounds like it should be related to java is an entirely seperate language.

Hi

The best thing to do now would be to actually get in to the folders where it was downloaded and delete all the folders manually. If you dont know where it got downloaded, Go to your start menu and using the search button, look for words like "Java" or "jdk" or a ".JAR".

This is just a suggestion. Also, for future reference, look at this page.

http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/jdk/install-windows.html#Environment

It gave me good installation tips. Good Luck!

What version of Java did you installed? and what platform are you running on (2000, XP or ?)

When you said you tried removing it and then re-install but failed, how did you try to remove it? One of the thing is that you can have multiple versions of JRE installed on your system, so you may want to try to install a "more" recent version of Java.

As far as I know, there is no need to enable Java Run Time. Once a Java Run Time is installed, it will be able to run Java Applet within a browser (the browser automatically picks it up)... There is of course a version compatibility issue such that certain applet which is compiled say under the 1.5.0 might not run properly if you have only JRE 1.4.2 installed. But that doesn't sound like your issue at the moment.

The only thing that you can enable for Java Applet is to enable the Java Console which meant the Java Console will automatically comes up and show you status message and etc; but not enabling it doesn't mean that the applet will not run.

Javascript on the hand is the scripting language and has nothing to do with running java console. And yes, for security purposes, you can enable javascript or not within the brower option.

The "test' that I was using to see if Java is enabled was at this site:

http://www.javatester.org/enabled.html. It said "This web browser can NOT run Java applets" I have Windows XP, I attemtped to remove the program through add/remove programs. J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6, but when I try and re-install it from java.com it says that it's already on my computer (and I am re-starting after I remove the program)

Hm... You are right.... Sorry, I didn't realize that you can actually enable/disable Java like this:)

It sounds like you try to re-install the JRE from the web site using the web installer, I wonder if it makes a difference if you download the windows installer before running it locally..

Just in case I missed it what browser are you using for this ?

Try this if you havent already; Go to tools menu in IE > Manage Add-ons > enable or disable add-ons.It will clearly, say whether Java has been enabled.
