JavaMail History

Hi Guys

I was just wondering if you could help me with some background history on the JavaMail API. I have been looking through the site and I cannot seem to find anywhere who is the developers and the motivations behind the development of the API.

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated

cheers

Brad

I'm one of the developers. What do you need to know? Are you writing an article? Are you confused about whyanyone would write a Java API for sending and readingemail?

I抦 just trying to gather some background history about the JavaMail API for a paper I抦 writing at Uni.

I need to find out :

- Who developed the JavaMail API

- The motivations for why the API was developed. Was it to fill a need in the market or to attract more developers to use Java for example?

Thanks for your quick response and keep up the good work with JavaMail API.

Regards

Brad

JavaMail was developed by Sun.

It was originally developed to allow us to build an email client in Java.

The email client (part of the HotJava Views product) never went anywhere,

but JavaMail has proven to be useful both for client applications and for

server applications. I was included in the first version of J2EE.

Around what year did the whole project start?

Like around when was version 1.0 of the API released?

v1.1 was around August 1998? and

v1.2 was around September 2000?

is that right?

any other version history you could share?

thanks,

(btw i'm also doing an assignment on JavaMail :D )

How nice of your instructor to give me a history assignment.

Please thank him for me, will you? :-)

I don't have the entire JavaMail history handy and I'm not going to

spend the time to rediscover it right now.

I believe JavaMail 1.0 was released in March 1998.
