MSIEXEC.EXE crashes on install

Hi,

I'm trying to install J2SE 5.0 on Windows XP MCE 2005, but the installer keeps crashing. I have tried installing both the online and offline installers, but they both throw up the same error. After seeing the progress bar move about 25% of the way across, I get the following error:

MSIEXEC.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close.

"More details" shows the following:

AppName: msiexec.exeAppVer: 3.1.4000.1823ModName: unknown

ModVer: 0.0.0.0Offset: 22746e65

This crash happens before I am showed things like the license agreement, and/or install location, etc...

I have tried running the installer through Safe Mode, but it won't install without the "Windows Installer" service running. Interestingly enough, it gets further through the installation than it would under "normal" mode which suggests a background application is causing the problem. However, even if I shut down every single background application during normal operation, I still get the crash occurring. It will still crash even if I shut down the "Windows Installer Service", so the crash doesn't appear to be a result of the service.

Can anyone help? If I can't use the installer, is there a way to install it manually? I can't run Eclipse without it!

Thanks for the links, but I have already tried all the instructions suggested by those MS KB articles, to no avail. I even tried this:

OK, well if I can't get the answer from Java's own creators, can anyone suggest where I can get an answer? How are these problems resolved normally? Do I have to pay for support?

I too am having the same exact error and problem. I also have tried all the suggestions in the KB articles suggested and also the symantec article. I wonder if running a Norton product may be the common issue here and maybe the version I'm running Norton Internet Security Pro 2004 and Norton Antivirus 2004. If there has been a resolution to this error discovered by either user or Sun I would be very happy if someone would share it with me as well.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Java's virtually a dead language these days. I used my computer for months without it, and all I missed were some rubbish animated menus, and ropey adverts - hardly a great loss.

I re-formatted my computer recently due to another issue, and it installed OK after that.

Would be nice if the Java support forums actually offered some support though, wouldn't it?

Looking into install log info for this issue will be useful. Can you send the log file extract. To create a log, follow instructions:

1) Download the windows offline installer from: http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=10549

2) Move the installer to c:\ directory

3) Run the installation again from C:\ with logging turned on: jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe /v"/L c:\install.log"

I have had a similar problem when I was trying to install a different package. After banging my head against the wall and coming up with a plethora of different ways to run the installation package, I did some research and stumbled onto the following passage in Bob Baker's 'Getting Started with InstallShield Developer and Windows Installer':

"The basic mechanism of the Windows Installer will not allow two different installations to enter the service process at the same time. The nested install custom action was implemented to get around this particular functionality."

So, if you are using Windows Installer, you cannot run another installation as an .exe. You must find a redistributable installation (.msi or .msm package) instead, and you must run them using Windows Installer's built-in functionality for launching a child installation. As far as I know, there are no redistributables for Java (I think the technical reason is that they want the user to manually confirm the license agreement). So, for the Java installation, I believe the best that you can do (assuming you are using Windows Installer) is kick the user out and force him to manually run the installation from you installation source.

I also cannot get any java to install. Had 1.5.4 - tried to update to 1.5.6 with offline - the status bar stops in the same place whether I use .5.6.7 or .8 versions. I am javaless except for 1.4 still is on the PC.

Here is the install log - stops at jsse. HELP. How can I get java back on this PC.

i found a solution to this problem,becouse the same thing happened to me.

To install java do this:

- Start->Run->cmd

- go to your java directory(where the instalation kit is)

- type this command: jre-1_5_0-bin-b99-windows-i586-12_aug_2003.exe /s /v"/qn ADDLOCAL=ALL IEXPLORER=1 INSTALLDIR=c:\java\jre"

instead of jre-1_5_0-bin-b99-windows-i586-12_aug_2003.exe you have to put your executable name

After this Java is installed. Hope it helped
