You get out of them what you put in. If you ask a clear question, show some evidence that you've at least tried to do it yourself, and don't cop an attitude, you'll get a lot of help.
If you're lazy and whiny and have a sense of entitlement, you'll be heaped with scorn.

Minutes, hours, days. It really depends on the question and who's on when you ask it. Most decently prhased questions in New to Java or Java programmi get a response in under an hour, I'd say.
What he said about it depending on the quality of your post cannot possibly be overstressed. If you use the code tags and present neat code (and not huge sections of irrelevant code), make an effort to boil your question down (i.e. not "hear iz my cod it dusnt werk Y?!" and type in complete English sentences that do not end in multiple punctuation marks, you will tend to get good responses.
The only time I have seen good posts go unanswered is when they address a really obscure topic... like doing something in Java relating to some particular database application that none of us have ever heard of.
