What is personalization?

I'm student from Thailand. I read EMV specification and found "personalization" word. I have try to read and try to understand whai is it. But i'm still not understand. I try to use the Eng-Thai dictionary and get the meaning. But look like it translate wrong way. Can someone tell me clearly , what is it?

(Is it mean install to card at the first time? , so confuse)

Personalization is load personal owner data in his card for first time; make ready the card for being used. Regards

The loading of all data assigned to a cardholder or card. Example, name/address or card-specific keys. Theres electro and visual personalization. Electro is writing data to the chip, visual is photo/text on topography of card.
