One day and counting

So, they've been bust for over a day now - and it seems that the number of effected forums is growing.

Surely such a poor performance in something as simple as a web forum isn't going to install much confidence in the posters here as to the ability of sun to support software.

As far as I can tell there's also still been no word from the "powers that be" giving any indication as to when they're going to pull their fingers out and actually do something about it.

This is a real cop out.

Oh, and to the poster of "validate phone number pattern xxx xxx xxxx . in struts" in forum 31 - Im putting the answer here becuase its driving me mad.

You want to use a "mask" validator to "validate format according to a regular expression". This is a built in validator - you just supply a regular expression as an argument. In your case, a regular expression which matches your phone number pattern.

As usual, its all in the user docs, which can be found here: http://struts.apache.org/userGuide/dev_validator.html

The gang of bullies on this board, according to Goldie. They're kept in check by DrClap if he's around, but otherwise do nothing but deciding which newbie is allowed to post in here and which isn't, severely flaming the innocent posters.

The oligarchy consists of, among others, duffymo, jverd, yawmark and myself IIRC, with Jos and KajBj being basically good guys and just followers, and UJ and Annie being our female puppets.

The oligarchy are the forum 'Illuminati'. They control whether your posts are/or accounts are deleted. Most of them live in a giant golden submarine in the Atlantic Ocean. The rest live in a chamber 500 feet beneath the Pentagon.

What amazes me is that no-one at Sun has even bothered to post something to one of the forums updating people on the crappy show of affairs.

I appreciate it might take them a while to find a forum which is actually working, but at least it would show a little appreciation for the people who voluntarily give up their time to help others with java.

The more I think about it the more the blanket of silence annoys me.

Welcome to our online community. We've just upgraded our forums software and are also now running under Sun ONE Application Server 7.0. Stay tuned in the coming weeks and months for new topic forums and features. You can browse directly in any of the forums below, or login or register to start posting your own messages.

I think that qualifies. ;)

(Though I'm afraid of the "new features" they planned.)

I doubt it.

Its just quite annoying that there are people around here who have been members for several years, providing newbies and more experienced java programmers alike with help and guidence - all free of charge - which of course, is in Suns interest.

To leave this place in such a poor state for a day and a half is bad enough, but to leave everyone completely in the dark about it is twice as bad.

Its a bit like rail delays. Customers go mad if trains are delayed, but they go even more mad if no-one bothers to tell them what the cause of the problem is, or how long it is likely to be until normal service is resumed.

Sorry for ranting - there's just nothing else to do :o)

I think most of the people here (okay, I'll step back and just say me) would be willing to take a look and FIX whatever is going wrong!

I posted this earlier, but they should really open-source the forum software. Make a special forum for enhancements, etc. Or even use something *existing* like CVS or whatnot. However, Sun's staff of interns or first-years plainly cannot handle updating this site.

IDRC.

Jive is a commercial product. This is old, but may provide some insights: http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/javaopensource/jive/

And open-source is not a warranty for quality. the popular stuff is very good as everyone wants to work on it, and the unpopular stuff remains crappy, because it's too much to do for the two persons actually interested it.

I did; I'm just trying to figure out what has gone berzerk: IMHO it's

some PK generator that can't stand the ruthless pruning that happened

Yes - and they (and you) are the same people who have essentially been providing a free service to Sun for the past x years - undoubtedly aiding at some level the uptake of the java language.

My humble view is that Sun should show more respect to these people.

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch,

saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies

to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon

the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and

Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the

counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou

not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then

proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the

number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand

Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight,

shall snuff it."

Man - Vertigo rocked - but the rest of the album didn't quite work out for me (maybe it'll grow on me, I dunno).

But this forum thing, come ON - you can't tell me that Sun deploys new software to production servers untested... well, I mean, I guess they do, but isn't that pretty Mickey Mouse (no offense to Mickey, just a figure of speech) especially for a large and venerable organization like Sun "the Network is the Computer" Microsystems?
