What's the big deal about Duke dollars?
I have been wondering for a long time since I am reading posts on this forum. What are these duke dollars really for? They aren't for real... and guys (maybe gals too) seem to be chasing 'em. There are some really nice posts on duke dollars... but honestly, what would we do with them?
Could anyone tell me please?
Merry Christmas!

You can use them to increase the number earnt and provide them as an ensentive for others to answer questions.

Really? I only answer questions when lots an' lots of *golden* Dukes are offered.
They should bleed for asking questions ... ;-) <diabolical laughter/>

I'm saving up for a duke suit http://internet.watch.impress.co.jp/www/article/2001/1128/tenji6.jpg
It's obviously a status symbol.

People used to chase those dukes a lot more in the past. There's were black-lists of people who always promised dukes but never delivered. Posses were even formed to chase down severe offenders. Some people always ended their posts with "and don't forget the dukes". Some even invented scams to boost up their duke pile.
I think they've lost in importance though. Maybe the turning point was when bbritta gave away like 1000 dukes for free. -:)

Nice explanation uj_ ... and since I am still not interested in duke dollars, I would start disbursing them with 1 for you.
Merry Christmas!

I'm like you in that I don't care, so save it for a rainy day. -:) But thanks anyways and Merry Christmas to you.
I think dukes even can be counter-productive because there's a tendency for newbies to revard cut-and-paste solutions. Without the duke-chasers around, with a bag of cut-and-paste code ready to slam into any thread with a duke promise, there's a much bigger chance for an interesting discussion on a topic.

Yeah, there are a lots of cut-n-paste solutions floating around... I once even got into a fight with a troll on this forum when I thrashed him for a silly answer. He was too much duke-hungry.
For a few duke dollars more...

Merry Christmas to uj_

Yeah, I noticed that after I posted. :(I kind of miss it. :( I haven't earned much myself (only 163), but I did when I got conflicting opinions, I'd look at the amount of duke dollars the two people had to help me decide when they both seemed to have good aruments.
> Yeah, I noticed that after I posted. :(> > I kind of miss it. :( I don't. In my view dukes represent one element of the human nature you don't need here, namely greed.

It might also have been when they went from "nearly worthless" to "totally worthless."
As I understand it, you use to be able to buy stuff with them--coffe mugs with Duke on them, etc. (That was before my time.) Around the time I started posting, Sun was giving away a prize--duke watch was one of them, there may have been others--for whoever earned the most D$ each month. Then they changed the rules slighly, but still gave a prize each month. Then they dropped that program, and since then, D$ can't be used for anything.
I guess you could kind of use them to guage how helpful somebody has been, but as I think somebody pointed out, it seems the new and "improved" (HA HA HA HA!) forums don't allow you to see others' D$ stats, so even that dubious value is now gone. Not that it was necessarily that reliable in the first place.

Yeah, there were others, I think some really nice ones (Leather Java jacket maybe?). I remember when I first signed up that I wanted to be good enough to get lots of dukes to get a prize....

Yeah, it's not exactly a reliable standard since a lot of people did cheat with them. Haha.

Sounds interesting... something I didn't know.
