installing update

Hello, I currently have j2sdk 1.4.2 installed on red hat fedora. I can't seem to get an applet to

view on my mozilla browser so I started looking at way this was the case. Looks like java has

a new version 5.0? My question is when i install 5.0 do I need to remove 1.4.2 first or do I just

install over the top of the old one? Thanks for any help.

Do not install on top of prior releases. Either delete the old and then install the new version, or install the new version alongside the old.Unless you know how to install/manage/run multiple SDK/JDK's, I recommend only one version in the machine.

Thanks for the reply! Do you know about removing on linux. Do I just remove the whole directoryand all the file contents or is there another uninstall method that I must do.

That depends on whose Linux -RH, Fedora, Suse, etc - and what was installed - RPM, bin, apt, etc.

Read Sun's Installation Instructions for the Java you downloaded, and your Linux vendor's documentation for the exact instuctions. For some you can just delete directories, for others there's an uninstall process.
