Help needed: Installation problems of JDK on windows XP Professional

Hi,

I am trying to install the 'Windows Online Installation, Multi-language (jdk-1_5_0-windows-i586-iftw.exe, 221.25 KB) ' on my newly purchased Dell laptop.

My laptop has the windows XP professional. It gives me a message that the installation will take several minitues. I waited for almost 10mins but really it did not installed the JDK.

I am a beginer in Java and I am looking forward for your help to resolve this installation problem.

My machine already has a Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE V1.4.2_03. Do you think that it is causing this problem.

Thanks for any help you can give.

If yo want to install Java 5 and don't plan on using the older version 1.4.2_03, I recommend that you uninstall the old version first, using Windows add/remove program function. If there are any left over folders after the deletion, manually delete them.

Then, instead of using 'Windows Online Installation, Multi-language (jdk-1_5_0-windows-i586-iftw.exe, 221.25 KB) ' , download and install the Offline version. There appears to be fewer problems with it, and it installs the same thing. it's a standard download/save the file/install process - see the Installation instructions. During the install you'll be able to select then install directory and options. Make sure that you install the public JRE. Set the path (#5 of the Installation instructions) and you should be good.
