J2SE 5.0!? for real dude?

Hi,

Why do I keep seeing J2SE 5.0 all over this website? At first I thought it was a misprint because when I tried download it was 1.5.0 but I see this "5.0" all over the java home page. Is this a marketing ploy and Sun is upgrading their version numbering system or are the new features of "5.0" so great that they decided to skip a few major version numbers?

It's for real. I think it's silly, but they did the same thing with Java 1.2 - the marketing guys called it Java 2. The actual version number is still 1.5, but for marketing purposes they're calling it Java 5.

Makes me wonder what they'll do if the version ever actually gets up to 2.0 - Java 20? Java 2000?

Sun does that on everything.

That is why "Solaris 8" is version "2.8".

It probably wont. It would go from "9" to "10".
