is it necessary to have an scjp certification to be a java programmer

hi i have been programming in java for quite some time now , i have heard a lot about SCJP .

Right now i am in college doing my grad. and java is not a part of our curriculum

i am quite comfortable with java and want to make my career as a java programmer.

i just want to know one thing from some professionals on the forum that is it very necessary to have an SCJP Certification if i want to apply in some big companies as a java programmer since i wont be having any other certifications that i have done java .

please tell me if it would be good for me if i do an SCJP course

Regards

I don't think it has a lot of weight. It doesn't do any harm either though. The big companies will test you and they are more interested in your real programming skills than a certification that anyone can do given a short notice and a cram book. Solid knowledge e.g. on algorithms and object-oriented principles is more important than being familiar with syntactic intricacies.

In that case you should already know the answer to your stated question...

Can't hurt, probably won't help either.

Formal training never hurts.

Neither I nor anyone I know gives any significance to someone having the SCJP cert when hiring. In the U.S. it's meaningless. Apparently in other places (India, from what I gather) its considered valuable.

You may find it personally useful, for example as a goal to motivate you to learn, or to help you figure out which areas you're strong or weak in.

the only value IMO is that it shows a possible willingness to study and learn skills, which might help get your resume through the first hurdle of getting noticed in between the deluge we get all the time.

It won't on its own get you an interview, or even get your CV sent to the people determining whether you get an invitation to an interview.
