SJCP for Fresh Graduates

Hi, I am a fresh graduate with a bachelor's degree. I would like to know if its recommendable to take SJCP for people like me who are fresh graduates and has no work experience yet. Thanks.

depends on what you mean by "recommendable"...

No such word exists after all :)

If you mean "will I get a job instantly when someone sees I'm SCJP certifiable" the answer is no (at least in the real world, in some Asian countries it seems that they'll hire anyone that has any diploma at all).

Are you saying that Asia isn't real?

I'm not assuming anything, but it certainly sounds like a weird place going from the questions raised here and elsewhere by people claiming to come from there, a place that sounds quite unreal...

Hi jmBuffer,

It matters not what work experience you have but what Java experience you have. So if you dont have much java experience then it would be more difficult than you had lets say 2 years of java working experience. Of course if you put your mind to it you could get a SCJP book and study it thoroughly (it's more or less a review for many java programmers though) and take it.

It depends. Having sat on a hiring panel of my previous employer,

I can tell you they gave zero weight to certifications. Zero! This is because

they found no correlation between certification and ability. None!

hi buffer,

hi to all folks.......

certification do matters a lot, coz when you go through whole of the procedure, studying about the technology, you grasp the each and every minor issue, each minor concept, that even a five year experienced professional also don't have, means to say you do have a edge over others, and as far as job interview is concerned, certification weigtage is not there, but your knowledge do have a weight, you can feel it in your interview after certification......

and as per my personal experience, i got a job just because of certification....

ok

so cheers and go for certification!!!!!!

nice in theory. In practice though it's different. A lot of people buy a book (or rip a PDF off the internet illegally), cram a few days or weeks, and pass the exam without learning a thing.

A lot of others learn to say the proper words and phrases but don't have a clue what it all actually means.

> each minor concept, that even a five year experienced

> professional also don't have, means to say you do

which just goes to show that a lot of what's tested in the exam is largely irrelevant to professionals.

> have a edge over others, and as far as job interview

Indeed. What's expected of you goes up. Instead of expecting a snotnosed kid fresh out of school to know nothing at all he's now expected to know at least the theory.

we do start gaining professional knowledge after getting graduated, and certification is a good point to start at !!!!

Rule #1. You cannot get the job if the hiring manager never sees your resume.

Certs will;

1) help you get through the search/filtering software used by HR departments and job posting web sites.

2) show that you worked to improve your knowledge.

3) show what level of technology you are current at.

4) show that you are serious about maintain your skills.

5) verification by an independant 3rd party source that you actually know somehting about the subject matter.

6) Assist in career transition. I was a senior UNIX administrator with a Software Engineering degree. No one would let me program. I had to get a cert that I could do what I have my degree in.

For finding work, certs will get you through filters and split hares between candidates of comparable experience, and more importantly keeps you from giving wrong aswers to my interview questions. In several interviews I was given questions from practice exams. Yes I will also admit to doing it also.

As a long time high tech worker, my opinion is:

Wages are about how much knowledge and experience you have. You have to keep studying/learning to stay employeed. You absolutely must know the fundimentals. It is not that much more effort to actually take the exam. Besides the material tested on the exam is of limited scope. You can master it in a reasonable amount of time. When studying for an exam, you tend not to meander about.

Absolutely! The SCJP is an excellent certification. I highly recommend it.

How much Java do you know well?

How much actual Java coding have you done?

What is the largest Java project you've worked on?

Hi all,

The SCJP is a great certification to have, even if you plan to/don't plan to use Java. I actually sat the exam yesterday (80%!) and it is very meticulous so don't expect an easy ride!

By going through the learning process (book or course-based) you will radically improve you understanding of OO concepts/ re-inforce your coding knowledge, and generally feel much more confident all-round - in interviews/job applications/chatting with team members etc.

Finally, as you're a fresh graduate, anything that will differentiate you from the other batch of fresh graduates has to be a great thing.

All the best,

Tom
