Bruce Eckel as "professor" Eck?And thinking you can get SCJP certifiable with no knowledge of Java yet it's highly valued in the industry and will get you a job?Not many places left where they think like that...

People seem to lose track that programming is still a business and as such what counts the most is experience. The certification helps to add to a resume when you don't have much experience, but certification plus no experience doesn't help much. I'm guessing, but I don't know if that would even make the difference between getting a job or not versus not having the certification.

That being said, IMHO, I would encourage you to get experience any way possible for any amount of money if need be, as long as you get paid something. Work on your interviewing and communication skills as that will be required as well. Most programmers like to focus exclusively on the technical skills and don't pay much attention to the rest, but those other skills are also what the hiring manager is looking for.

HTH,

James

BTW, it took me 18 months working 18 to 25 hours a week to go from part time programming with small business doing client-server work to get into full time programming. After two years and the original project I worked on went away, I was presented with the opportunity to do java development and I took it. I put in my time and lots of effort regardless of how much I made with the idea I was planting seeds to my own success. It didn't come overnight, but it has definitely paid off in the long run.

> So why did you put duke stars with this question? That's for anyone able to produce the royal jelly that would turn the OP into a professional programmer.
