Solaris 8 host hardware migration help

Hi all

I've an Ultra 2 running Solaris 8 and we have to move the whole system to a Netra T1.

The Ultra 2 has lots of legacy software that nobody knows how to reinstall :-( . So I would like to copy the ultra2's OS and files to the Netra.

Anybody know a good method of doing this ?

Flasharchive ? or just copying the files from one host to another ?

I'm kinda after some pointers as to which is the best method of host hardware migration.

Regards

Andy

I have not tried this in a long long time, and I don't recall the architecture of an Ultra 2, but if you physically migrated the disk from the Ultra 2 to the T1, and did a boot -r, would that work?

I recall doing this successfully, but from an E220R to an E420R, which are very similar architectures. This would only work easily if the OS disk was the only disk in the system and the /dev/dsk/ mappings were the same for both system disks.

Obviously, make a backup first, since this could irreversibly damage your only disk.

Actually, you might try doing a flar-install first as a trial, it's pretty easy, since if that doesn't work, I don't think migrating the physical disk will work either.

ultra2 and netra t1 are similar enough architecture that a flash archive should work

if you were trying to go from say a sun4m architecture to sunfire, your results would be probably not so good - jeff
