First let me say GOOD LUCK. Solaris authentication through AD(samba and winbind). Windows authentication through Solaris(Show no love). We researched for 3 months on how to do this.

We searched and to the best of our findings Widows will not talk to an LDAP server for authentication. The best we have found is "Identity Sync Software" from SUN(nightmare to configure). It will sync users info from AD to LDAP. Or Samba w/ Winbind and have the Solaris machines authenticate with AD.

With the future release of Samba 4 you will be able to structure a system that will allow authentication for AD/windows machines and Solaris system.

Reply back with your findings.

Here's the deal. Windows will not allow DS (Directory Server) to force group policies, and that is why you would need IDS (Identity Sync for Windows). You can do just authentication, but its kind of a pain in the butt.FYI - Some of the docs, leave important configuration information.
