StorageTek 2540 storage pool/volume size

Greetings all-

We just purchased a 2540 with 12 fiber 15k rpm SAS disks with a max capcity of ~3.2TB. I installed the Java Web Console on a machine and can successfully connect to the array and configure stuff. One thing I'm confused about is that I can create profiles for storage pools, and create a volume within a storage pool, but whenever I create a storage pool it always says that the max capacity of the pool is 1.988TB, even though I have over 3TB on the array... ? I can't seem to "specify" pool size when I create a pool... I can create 2 pools and then 2 volumes to use up all the available space on the array, but that's cheesy, and there must be a way to have a pool that has the max storage capacity of the entire RAID set... ? Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Thanks in advance,

erich

Which storage profile are you using? How many disks are defined for that profile? Maybe you need to create a profile that can use 12 disks, or as many as you need.

Alas, I've tried many different profiles. I have one hot spare, so I've tried a profile with 11 disks, I've tried a profile with "variable" disks, etc, and can't seem to get it to go above 1.988TB. I've noticed that if I make the block size smaller than 512KB that the pool size drops even more, to like 1.3TB, but somehow I don't think the block size is what's limiting me... I've been able to create 4.6TB volumes on Sun 3511's before with no problem, which is older hardware than the 2540, so that's why I'm confused...

There was something similar to this on the forum a while back regarding 6140 arrays, I believe it was a limit of the SCSI-3 protocol and that it can only address upto 2TB. I have had the same recently myself with a 6140 and had to break the disks up into several Storage Pools to get round the issue.

Not quite - the 6130 and 6140 use 12-byte Command Descriptor Block which limits the maximum volume size to just south of 2TB. The SCSI standard allows for 6, 10, 12 and 16 byte CDBs (and indeed later standards allow for variable length CDBs)

Future firmware releases may of course change this limit.
