Hard Disk Lifespan

Hi,

Is there a command that can show the date of the hdd first mounted?

May i know how long is a hard disk life span? So i may budget for a new hard disk.

help please,anyone knows any way to detect the life span of the sun hard disk, so that its easier to predict when we need to buy a new hard disk. Usually to purchase a new hard disk, we ve to wait almost 1 month to get a new hard disk delivered to us. if there is any idea how we can predict the life span of the hard disk, it will be so much easier.

there is imo _no_ method, to find the date, a drive was first mounted .

but you can try open source program "smartmontools" to read the raw smart-data's from the disc.

with the values of "reallocated sector count", "power-on hours", "power cycle count" and "throughput performance"

you can estimate, how long the hard disk _could_ still live.

Caution: It doesn't work with raid-controllers, because you get no direct access to a disk in an array. some vendors offer own i/o-controlles, but mostly for wintendo or linux. :(

(we have always 3-4 hard-disks in reserve for our necessary servers for such cases. ;) )
