Disk space crisis

Hi all,

I installed Solaris 10 on a 15-GB partition. According to the wesite http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/specs.jsp, it needs only 2 GB mim; now after using for a while I discover that I only have less then 400 MB space left on that partition (the status bar in the Explorer-like window of folder File System says so). I was downloading a 400-ish MB file and then alerted that there's no space for the download to continue! Can somebody explain this to me? And pls give me some tips to free up disk space in Solaris (like how to uninstall unnecessary programs, etc)...Many thanx.

Obvious question: Did you do a minimal instal or an end-user install. The former takes around the 2gig minimum requirements, the later takes a significant amount more (like 8gig IIRC)

I can't remember but I guess I used the latter...Anyway, you know how to remove some unnecessary components or clean up temp files in Solaris?

If it's a new and recent installation, just do it all over again.

Just look more closely at what you select for the environment you're installing.

My 7.5GB disk holds a Full + OEM install cluster of Solaris 10(3/05) very nicely it's sliced for / and /swap .

I just didn't install the Documentation option.

You're never going to read those documents, anyway.

( that documentation has no relation to man pages, by the way )

I have been beating my head against this too since I did not pay attention to the defaults on a purchased system (sun) and just plugged it in and started working. By default solaris makes a painfully small /var partition and that is where my problems are coming from. 250gb disk but it defaults to something like 6gb.

/dev/dsk/c1d0s56050982 5277387 71308689%/var

I am going to have to shoe horn some kind of fix for it since I can't really take that system down anymore.

Rukbat what is your opinion on getting rid of old packages left after updates? I believe they are needed to uninstall patches, but if everything is working fine is their another reason not to clean them out?
