Can't open boot device
I have an Ultra 60 Creator 3D. It came pre-installed with Solaris 10, not sure which release (6/6 or 11/6).
I'm trying to reinstall with the 11/6 DVD & am receiving:
Boot device: cdrom File and args:
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
Evaluating: boot
Can't open boot device
{0} ok
Yes, it is a DVD drive in the box. When I do devalias, it shows cdrom & not dvdrom. Does this make a difference? Or could this be just a bad drive?
Thanks.

Aubrey,
That error message suggests a problem reading the DVD media.
If that system has an original, Sun-badged 390-0025 DVD reader in it,
the problem may just be the drive. They were known to have problems booting from DVD media.
They can read the media fine, it's the booting part, where there were problems.
Glance through this forum thread that was started January 2006:

... difficult thing, however, is to find a SCSI optical drive, if you decide to replace it.

Thank God for Ebay. lolSo, if the new drive doesn't work, what are my options? The other thread mentions installing Solaris 8 or 9, but can I install fresh from that or upgrade? (I think I know the answer, but just want to hear it). Thanks,Aubrey

I had the same problem when I first tried to boot a Solaris 10 DVD on an Ultra 10. Running "boot cdrom" in OBP failed to boot, I think with the same message you got. Then I did a "boot cdrom -s" and it booted fine in single user mode. So you might try that before spending money.
But note that this did not solve all my problems. Now my hard drive installation will only boot using the "-s" switch (I started another thread on that).

Hello Aubrey,
is this a Sun DVD drive ? If it's not a Sun drive, make sure the block size jumper is set to 2048 and not 512 (with the wrong setting the DVD can be mounted, but you won't be able to boot from the DVD).
Did you try to mount the DVD after booting the pre-installed Solaris 10 from disk ?
Does it boot from CD media (CD 1 of Solaris 8 or 9 works) ?
