Sun Enterprise 220R output issue :S

Hey this is my first sun server and im having a bit of a problem :/.

I can't seem to get any output in hyperterminal from this sun 220R from any of the serial ports on the back.

Just incase im doing something Very noob heres a picture of how I have it hooked up.

It goes from the usb to serial converter to a adapter then into the machine.

Ive tryed all 3 of the serial ports and none have given me any output, Thanks.

Also I know this usb to serial adapter is good as I can administrate my 3com modem with it.

you should be using a null modem cable... normally in serial port 1 (there are only TWO)....

if you say that a usb adapter works, great... you don't have serial ports on your peecee?

so, search in these forums on the null modem cable and see if you can find one...

It works great on my 3com modem for configuring it ... but I can't access the sun with it :/.

borrowed from another post...

"I connect the null modem cable 25pins male to >220R< Serial Port A and the another end 9 pins female to PC windows COM1.

When I connect the Hyperterminal windows in COM1 with this configuration:

VT100, 9600, 8, None, 1, Hardware"

keep trying...

Done its still not working.

I bought this used and untested ... im starting to think I just got a dead server.

Is there any way to reset the pram/cmos on this board ?

you mean the open boot prom? ain't no pram/cmos.... without a keyboard/monitor or working null modem cable... I can't think of a way.

I imagine you don't have a Sun keyboard/mouse and some sort of monitor? (if you had a frame buffer...)...

maybe you will get some encouragement during the week!

for now, move on to another project... before you get too frustrated... it took me a couple weeks to convince a e450 to post, but I had a monitor/keyboard/mouse...

I got it going looks like my cable was damaged.

But All I get is the following

Can't open input device.

Keyboard not present. Using ttya for input and output.

Sun Enterprise 220R (UltraSPARC-II 450MHz), No Keyboard

OpenBoot 3.23, 512 MB memory installed, Serial #15056598.

Ethernet address 8:0:20:e5:be:d6, Host ID: 80e5bed6.

it doesn't go any further :/.

it is a start!

I think you use control + break to get to an open prompt... you have downloaded the service manual? lot of diagnostics in that pdf...

http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/806-1081-10.pdf

keep working on it...

>>> if/when you get to the open prompt... set-defaults

then

reset-all

that will do what it says...<<<<

what position is the key switch in? if it is in the locked position, I don't think you can do much...

if you got to the open boot prompt, did you see the whole boot process? if so, you should have seen something...

I have run out of ideas... the troubleshooting is in the pdf...

The key is on the I position.

Open boot seems to work ... untill anything that requires leaving it happens :/.

Is there anyway I could reflash it ?.

last update was OBP_3.31.0

from this page

http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/advsearch.do?collection=PATCH&type=collectio ns&queryKey5=106455&toDocument=yes

the fun thing is you need to get it on a hard drive in order to install it... which

means you need a version of Solaris to do it... or some operating system. I don't think updating the OBP is going to do anything special...

have you tried installing an operating system yet? when you get a prompt, put an OS cd in and type boot cdrom... see what happens...

you may need to take the memory and the cpu out and re-seat them... just to see if that may be part of the problem.

less expensive to find a used U60 (220r) motherboard... I think, yes I know, it is the same for all Sun NVRAM for Ultra 1, 5, 10, 30, 60, 80, E220R, E420R... you should be able to find an Ultra 1... hard to believe that is was a bad nvram... but it shouldn't be too hard to replace!!!

keep in touch!

The problem changed after he started trying to run hardware tests.

My mac address became ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff and my date was gone.

After that the system was working perfectly... excluding network and the date.
