How do I get javaw.exe from using 50%+ of my resources?
OS: WXPpro
Browsers: Firefox, Opera, (and only if I'm forced) MS Internet Explorer (all the latest versions & regularly updated).
I am not a developer. I am an ordinary PC user who has suddenly had a Java file - "javaw.exe" - start takin more than 50 percent of my system resources. And, after spending a couple of hours googling, I cannot find out why ... or how to get it to stop.
I've rebooted several times. Done a registry scan and fix. Done a virus scan. Several spyware scans ... and the only problem I have is this insidious file: javaw.exe.
Any suggestions or advice how I get this thing under control would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob
This is a forum for developers of java programs. Your question is not likely to be answerable here.
You will need to contact the developer of the Java application you are using.

Thanks for replying, but there should be a forum for people who have problems with Java and you developers should be aware of these problems.
Thanks for replying, but how would I know which application is causing the problem? The problem is "javaw.exe" . I never heard of this file before it started causing problems and don't even know how it got on my computer (unless it came bundled with one of the browsers).
BTW - "javaw.exe" is using all these resources WITHOUT any other programme being loaded. In other words, it is gobbling up all these resources without any other programme (besides my anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware) being open . So trying to figure out what programme "javaw.exe" is related to is not an option at this point.
javaw is an app that is used to start the execution of a program written in Java. So, some program YOU have installed which was written by SOMEONE ELSE is being executed. YOU need to contact that SOMEONE ELSE because we have no idea what applications you have bought/stolen/pirated and installed on your computer.
Surfwriter,
I'll try to help but these guys are right: this forum is part of the Sun Developer Network. It's kind of like going into the Microsoft forum and saying "(random program x) is using all my resources". They're not going to know how to help you.
That being said, is it right when you start your computer? If it is, check your services.msc (Start->run->services.msc) and see if there are any weird programs in there. I would hate to think that Java is being used for malware now, but it seems possible.
Try running HijackThis, Lavasoft's AdAware, or Spybot S&D. As stated, javaw is just the virtual machine (think of it like a helper program) to call and run other java programs. It really could be anything, but without further information, this is the best we can do.
Thanks for your help. The "javaw.exe" does start when I start the computer (the only programmes that would be running would be my anti-virus and firewall. So I'll try running my anti-spyware programmes and see how it goes. Cheers, Bob

But you don't have a problem with Java. That's the problem.
As LTF pointed out, if you see javaw running, this means that there's a Java application running. The fact that you don't see it means nothing -- it just means that the application has no GUI. It could as well be malware.
You can kill javaw from the Task Manager (by pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE).
Thanks for all your suggestions. I did stop javaw.exe using task manager and that helped me to isolate the problem. It was caused by the "Power Management Software" that came with my new BELKIN UPS which I connected earlier today. I can't explain why I didn't associate that new software with the problem. But as you mentioned, it was running in the background.
I have phoned the BELKIN tech people who tell me that it must be a java problem, because they haven't had anyone else complain about it. They've suggested that I completely uninstall java (with the latest update), download the latest version again and then do a clean install.
I'll try that and see how it works. If it doesn't, I'll simply uninstall the BELKIN management software and try using the software that came with the UPS I replaced. Thank you all for all your help.

Cool. "No one else has complained (yet), so its not our problem. Neener, Neener, Neener."
If that is truly what happened, I would return their product, if possible, and never again buy anything from them.
And, try to tell as many people as possible to do the same, through whatever means I had available.

To BELKIN's credit, I received a "firmware update" late yesterday that fixed the problem. So they must have looked into my issue with javaw.exe, found out what was wrong and fixed it. Now I have their power management programme running in the background AND no Java problem. WinWin. Thanks for all of your help and comments ... and for tolerating my intrusion. Cheers, Bob

You're welcome. Don't forget the Duke Stars ;-)
