Adding a keyboard listener

How do you add a keyboard listener if the app is non GUI based.ie it runs in the background but still picks up the events.

Sometimes my keyboard squeaks. I think it is coming from the back legs. (I can't stand it when people fold those under and have their keyboard flat!) Anyway, how can I listen for the squeak? Yeah, yeah, I know, JNI.
