Can't open boot device (cdrom)

Hi all,

i had this problem a couple of times with sun blades 100/150/200.

The HD crashes, i by a new one, connect, power on, [Stop]+[A]

ok boot cdrom

... ... ...

Can't open boot device

ok show-disks

...(make my selection)

ok nvalias cdrom2 [Control+y]@1,0:f

ok nvstore

ok boot cdrom2

...

Can't open boot device

it is an IDE cdrom model LTN-486S on a Sun Blade 150.

I tried the following paths (it is in primary ide)

/pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@1,0:f (from the show-disks command)

and a few variations of it, like cdrom@3,0:f

What else can i do? The cdrom was working before.

Thanks in advance for any help ...

...well, the basics first... is your new hard drive on the same ribbon as the cdrom? Is the hard drive set to cable select?

Also, what's the output of 'show-ide'? Is the CD you want to use in that list?-- Darren

I have the same problem with a SUN Ultra 10 workstation

Hi,

I understand that it used to have a RAID 1 configuration with 2 hard-disks (mirroring) with Solaris 8. It was running a SUN Ray server (an old version, dunno which one). I wanted to upgrade it to Solaris 10 and run the version of the sunray server 3.1 (already got all necesary media).

I began the new installation of the Solaris 10 OS, and it began ok. When configuring the partitions, it showed me the 2 disc that are present on the system, i choosed to install it on both of then (overrindig the previous RAID config), On the partitions configration screen, i choose to install /export/home and / and /opt on the first disk and the remaining partitions on the second disk. No warnings or errors until then. By next, the system loaded a few files and then showed a message to reboot the machine. Then, it crashed. The boot process wasn磘 right, it began to show some random letters and then rebooting the system over and over again.

After this, y used the stop+a command on the nvram prompt i wrote some few commands to make i boot again from disk but nothing got better. Then i tried ok reset-all and got the same results

I tried ok boot cdrom command but it shows me these error:

Can't read disk label

Can't read disk label name

Can't open boot device

Sooo i red about it at google, asked some friends and try to create a new alias on the nvram interface using the output from the ok show-disks command, but got the same error messages. Now i really don磘 know what to do. I thought using the old solaris 8 original media that came with the workstation, but, it didn磘 recognize it either, the same error messages.

The ok probe-ide commands shows the cdrom ok

Really thanks

Sorry for the delay. This i cannot understand.

I changed the HD and did a `boot cdrom`. Then it worked.

I was always booting cdrom and having failure, but the problem

was in the HD. (?) Thank a lot anyway ...

There is a second machine with the same problem that i will test ...
