Vacation message does not work on aliases

Hello, we are using Sun Messenger 5.2 in combination with LDAP. We have set up an alias file in /opt/SUNWmsgsr/config/aliases.

When a user sets his vacation message, it only gives an auto-reply on his e-mail address as listed in the LDAP configuration and not on his aliases.

For example. One user's e-mail address is john.johnson@mydomain.com.

In the aliases file we forward john@mydomain.com to john.johnson@mydomain.com and this all works.

Now, this user enables his vacation message. When someone sends an e-mail to john.johnson@mydomain.com he receives an auto-reply as expected.

However, when someone sends an e-mail to john@mydomain.com, he does not receive an auto-reply.

Hi,

The behavior you describe is entirely consistent with the design of the auto-reply/vacation message functionality within Sun Messaging Server.

Vacation messages are only sent when the TO:/CC: address in the email header matches the recipients mail:/mailalternateaddress:/mailequivalentaddress: LDAP attributes. This is so that when you send a message to a mailing list for example (which has a TO:/CC: of say mail-list@domain.com) a vacation message doesn't get sent back to the sender.

Try using the mailalternateaddress: attribute instead of the alias file for the user and see how that goes.

Regards,

Shane.
