THE END OF JAVA

http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/security/0,39044215,62028389,00.htm?

"Google's Security team has discovered vulnerabilities in the Sun Java Runtime Environment that threatens the security of all platforms, browsers and even mobile devices."

And in case you dont realize im being sarcastic with the subject title,

ill quote part of the article:

"According to Gatford, the bugs threaten pretty much every modern device."

"Australia's Computer Emergency Response Team analyst

warned that anyone using the Java Runtime Environment or Java Development Kit is at risk."

Hahahaha... Sure, completely scare the F out of everyone.

Its not like we have a hard enough time selling people on the

idea of Java for the dekstop as it is.

#13 on reddit with the title "Google discovers Java flaw so dangerous, they won't release it, as it threatens all platforms" for maximum scare mongering.

we see stuff like this regarding microsquish windows nearly every day. I think I've developed calluses.

yea but who writes article headlines that read:

"Dangerous Java flaw threatens virtually everything"

we need more articles that read:

"gooey Java goodness brings world peace"

Those are two different kinds of Java. ;-)

For some reporters the cup is half full of java, for others it is half empty. For me, it's f*** the java, I want a full glass of beer.

This is a blown out of proportion thing. Yes there are bugs in Java like there are bugs in anything.

Anyway see this http://news.com.com/Java+flaw+poses+widespread+security+threat/2100-1002_3-6196493.html

Actually here is the Sun link

http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-102934-1

Basically there are some bugs in image parsers that bad code coul use to do bad things to the VM. There are updates to patch this for runtimes 4, 5 and 6.

The fact that this has been in existence since at least 4 speaks to how little known this bug was I would guess since today is the first mention of it.

Whatever.

That "is as bad as it gets"? Stupid.

Moreover more reading indicates that this is not a bug that can be exploited in Java on the whole but is specific to webstart and you can only exploit it through jnlp files.

So you know... I mean still not good but maybe less than the "threat to everything".

The NY Times actually had an article a few weeks ago that said the Mayan calendar predicted some cycle ending in 2012 that would mean the end of the world. Of course there are armies of loonies who are proclaiming this to be the beginning of a new age.

I think they forgot to factor the JVM into their plans. When this bug hits, it's apocalypto, baby!

On the walls of the temple where they found the Mayan inscription they found a little guy who looked JUST LIKE Duke! Scientists are studying it now.

I'm heading for the cellar. I'm taking my Dukes and some doughnuts with me.
