Sun AppServer 8.2 + IdM 7.0 - problems with Active Sync Logs

We're running Identity Manager 7.0 in Sun Application Server 8.2 on RedHat Linux 4.0. We have two Database Table resources that have been set up to use ActiveSync. The ActiveSync processes seem to be working quite happily, but we're going through a data validation phase at the moment and wish to be able to examine ActiveSync log files.
The trouble is that we're not having much joy with the ActiveSync log files actually being written.Sometimes the log files get written to disk, but most of the time they aren't. I've checked things such as ensuring that Application Server has write permissions at the OS level to the log directories.
Have I missed something important, such as adding a java permission to the application server server.policies file?
Any help would be appreciated
