Upgrade U5 CPU

I found an earlier thread about possibly upgrading an Ultra 5 CPU and see it's pretty dependent on the system board number. Where do I find this number?

I'm looking at going from a 360 MHz to a 440.

Also, if my system is compatible, is this a simple drop in swap or is more involved?

Thanks for any advice!

Amanda

the only motherboard that won't take the 440mhz is 375-0009, all the others will.

the cpu connector pins are rather delicate, but just be careful...

the U5 doesn't recommend the 440mhz,

http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U5/components.html#CPUModule

maybe because it only had a 200W power supply and the U10 had a 243W...

have fun,

To be absolutely certain you'll need to find the board part number

right on the systemboard itself, on a paper barcode sticker.

Try looking for it near the connector for the PCI riserboard.

It will be the first seven digits of ...

375-xxxxYYYYYYYzzzzzzzzz

If it's the original board, never replaced by a repair call,

then also look at the front left-hand corner of the front exterior bezel.

There will be a transparent label, referred to as the "EZ Label".

There's text on that label to tell you what was inside the box.

( EZ = "easy info without needing tools to open it all up")

Here's a link at a third party non-Sun web site:

http://www.sunshack.org/data/sh/2.1/infoserver.central/data/syshbk/Devices/Syst em_Board/SYSBD_Ultra5_10.html#0066

(board layout and information about the EZ label)

I predict that since you're already at 360MHz, you've got a 375-0079 board.

Yes, it'd be a simple drop-in-and-close-the-cover replacement.

Are you anywhere close to Silver Duke Stars yet ?

H.K.,

I know what you mean.

At least the SunShack site in Australia has the old SSH info.

But I was curious if you'd glanced inside your Duke Stars account, for its point total ?

Your Stars icon would change from bronze to silver at the 100 point level.

Left column.

See "My Duke Stars".

Find your point total.

I have some to spare for such a long time contributor.

I know, it's only a cosmetic `bragging rights` thing, but Hey !

Oh, Okay.

... back to original poster Amanda ...

(Sorry about the hijaack of the discussion)

Let us know how you make out.

Gentle vertical removal and a gentle install of the cpu modules.

I expect it all to go just fine, and a >20% improvement of cpu speed.

Hello,

even if the requirement OBP >=3.19v4 is already met (prequisite for the 360MHz cpu), I would recommend that you update to the latest OBP and POST .

Besides the 80Mhz higher cpu speed, the cache of the 440MHz cpu module is 2MB instead of the 256KB of the 360Mhz module. The 360Mhz module with 2MB cache is rare, at least I never found one (except in the SSH).

I got an early Ultra 10 with system board 375-0009 (only 8-bit graphics too) and 24x CD-ROM. Maybe I will try someday if a 440MHz modules works. There have been reports on the usenet that the 440Mhz module work (after applying the OBP patch) in this early version.

The reason for not supporting the faster CPU modules, might be (besides the 200W power supply) the smaller front fan.

Michael

P.S.: Harold: I tried at least once to "remind" people to award Duke Stars to you. It didn't work ...

I put a 440 MHz in my U5 a few years back and haven't had any problems. The motherboard is a 375-0079. It still runs quite cool with all the PCI slots occupied as well.I noticed a 30% improvement over the 360 MHz on one "benchmark" (PovRAY)
