my "new" Ultra 5 + SunPCi
I have an Ultra 5 that was rescued from the recycler that I am hoping to learn Solaris with. Before I get the OS installed, is it possible to find out what specs this box has? I have the serial # from the case, and thought maybe that corresponded to a configuration I could look up somewhere. Also, it has the 400 MHz SunPCi card installed, and I was wondering if this was supported under Solaris 10. I think it predates Win98, but was curious if Win98+ have been found to work with it.

for the U5
SunPCi 400 should run Windows2000 but the card will run with Solaris 8, maybe Solaris 9... not supported with 10.
check http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/1118.2?q=sunpci for the documentation for the SunPCi card.
and you can search these forums also!

I see the docs stating 2.5 - 7. Is it personal experience that leads you to state Solaris 8 will work but 10 is definitely out, or is that detailed in the release notes of those versions? What about http://www.recursivegreen.com/howtos/sunpci.html ?

Hello,

The doc (User's Guide ) hasn't been updated. But if you review the second link from the page (recursivegreen) you provided and scroll down to SunPCi 1.3, it clearly states "Solaris 2.5.1, 2.6, 7 or 8 operating environment" and "The final released version of the SunPCi software for the 400MHz SunPCi I card is 1.3. This version supports Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 98SE, and Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and is a superset of previous driver versions.".
Using the SunPCi 300/400MHz with Solaris 9 works after creating the links and re-running sunpcload, operation with Solaris 10 is very unreliable. These cards and even the next generations SunPCi II (600MHz Celeron), IIpro (733MHz Celeron) and SunPCi III (1.4Ghz Athlon) went EOL (End of Live) years ago.

Thanks for that catch; I didn't follow every link on the page.

"Unreliable" meaning what, exactly? Maybe I should install 9 instead.

Yeah, I know it's old, but it's cool stuff nonetheless.
