Shame about SUN4M

I have a Sparcstation 5 that I have dusted off and thought it might be nice to run Solaris 10 on it - it runs Solaris 8 just fine. Alas I got the message "does not run on this hardware..." My aim was familiarisation and practice, so I'm going to have to use Solaris 9. The Sparcstation is a very nicely made machine and I think it is a shame that Solaris 10 will not run on it.

Jeez - if it will load on a nasty old PC!!

Lets start a pressure group! Chucking the Sparcstation 5 into landfill because there is not a compiled Solaris 10 for it is not very modern.

Anyone else feel the same?

Umm, as a former sun employee i'm glad that they finally dumped out some old hardware, it makes the support life easier.

Solaris 10 for SPARC is truely 64 bit, so none of the old 32 bit architectures are supported.

Also, personally i have an old Ultra 10 that i don't use any more, since there is plenty of faster hardware around that i can run Solaris on, there just doesn't seems to be any point in running old hw, which in a way is a bit sad.

Still, with OpenSolaris i wouldn't be surprised if someone decided to include support for old hardware. You never know.

I don't really feel the same... I hate to see support for old machines drop, but I can load Solaris 10 on older SPARC boxes than I can Intels....

Well, the ultra architecture is 10 years of age, and you still can run Solaris 10 on most of them, try running Win XP on a 10 year old system ;-) .7/M.
