SunFire V210 Boot Issue

Hi All,

I have been having a severe problem with one of our servers, our SunFire V210.

It had some power issues with the PSU faulting and I have just replaced the power on it. However due to those issues, and some maintenance on it (software) a few times over the past six months it has had to be rebooted.

I cannot find anything on the net of anyone having the same issue so I am a little concerned.

When you put power into the rear of the server it starts in standby and the management light comes on on the management port, pretty standard.

Once you press the power button it fires up and both hard disks lights come on and then turn off.. but... The server will not show anything on the screen on any monitors I have tried with it (17/15" LCD and CRT) and the keyboard will not kick in (according to the lock lights) for about 10 minutes. My real concern is that even when turning the machine on it does not show any boot info whatsoever, so I have no idea what the boot of this server is meant to look like (inherited).

After the long wait it will eventually bring up a white screen that 'appears' to be the boot screen, but if so, can anyone work out why it would take so long to display?

Thanks if anyone could help, I'm ready to dump it for a bigger better machine if it cannot be solved.

I am making an assumption here that you are using a graphics card with this, is that correct?

Does the server actually boot and are you able to access it over the network, I.E. telnet, ssh, etc?

If I am correct in the above, that you are using a graphics card and you are able to connect to is over the network, then I would suggest that your OBP settings have been changed to point away from your graphics card, or your keyboard and mouse are not connected.

You can start with the above, also it would be a good idea to try and connect to the server over its serial port and see exactly what it is doing.

Try this as if nothing else it will help to clarify what is going on.

Another thing to look at assuming it boots is the graphics setting in the OS. If it fails to even boot or you are unable to connect to it even over the network then you will need to connect to it over its serial port and provide us with a showlogs -v.
