Unable to connect to a Sunfire 280R

Disclaimer: Know little about Sun.

We are a windows and Linux shop and got an old Sun server to evaluate. Funny thing, I can't find any information online on how to get into it.

I've read:

http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/pdf/806-4806-10.pdf

pages 64ish, and I understand the concept of using a terminal emulator.

But I can't find any information on how to configure a windows emulator to use the RJ45 > serial connector cable.

For example, I don't know how to tell Hyper terminal to look at the RJ45 port for the terminal connection.

1. Does anyone know any _good_ online docs I can follow, that discusses Windows terminal emulators specifically?

2. Does anyone have any tips to get me in the right direction?

old system... EOL'd 2 years ago.... I am old..

easiest (should still work) is use a null modem cable... 25 pin to 9 pin.. and/or the appropriate rj-45 adapters... there should be MANY posts about the null modem cable...

one question... do you have the all-so-important key? otherwise you are toast...

too bad you don't have a frame buffer and mouse/keyboard... much easier...

I think on the 280 it is a serial port using an RJ45 connector. It probably originally came with the adapter. On the Windows (HyperTerm) side you use COM1 or 2 etc.

And again, if connecting from Windows, and if you don't care for Hyperterminal ...

Get Teraterm.

Any version of it from 2.3 to whatever might be the latest.

It's freeware.

(google for it)

I've used the same old version 2.3 on every WinDoze from Win95 through WinXp.

It just works and has a native mouseable, menu selectable, STOP-A break function in it.

Thanks for having patience with a newbiew.I think I ordered the wrong adapter, and I had it backwards. I'm going to order a DB9/25 serial cable, and try that.

Hello,

I have read your thread!

I have a problem to get access to my Sunfire 280R with RSC.

I磎 the new admin from the server and haven磘 got the passwort.

Is it possible to reset the RSC-card to factory default? I have tried the reset jumper on the card. But it isn磘 an factory default.

Can you tell me what to do?

thanks

Correct. There isn't a factory default.

Here is the SF 280R resource page in the Sun System Handbook:

There is a link on that page to the system's documentation (all its manuals).

Read the 280R Products Notes, the Owner's Guide, the RCS Release Notes, and the Service Manual.

If I recall correctly, the proper order of steps are that you first install Solaris,

then within the OS environment you enable and configure the RSC's functionality,

then you make your physical connection to the RSC and complete its setup.

Start with that documentation.

If that's not enough, then trawl through Docs.Sun.Com for general RSC documents.
