java.lang.NullPointerException? only on firefox? HELP

ok, so while running any java applets, i get this error

java.lang.NullPointerException

at com.sun.deploy.net.proxy.DynamicProxyManager.reset(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.deploy.net.proxy.DeployProxySelector.reset(Unknown Source)

at sun.plugin.AppletViewer.initEnvironment(Unknown Source)

i am not a java coder, i am just trying to use java applets created by people.

the strange thing is, this only happens on mozzila firefox, and only on my one desktop, someone else who has a desktop on my computer can run java perfectly! PLEASE HELP! how can i fix this so i can use java applets?

I'm getting the same issue as well very recently, i.e. the last week or so. Neither IE/Firefox can run applets due to this issue. I assume it's looking for a Registry entry that isn't there.

FYI - I'm using a direct internet connection and do not have 'lingering' proxy details w/in my settings. I've reinstalled JRE 6 after uninstalling 5. Still have the issue. I've also uninstalled all Firefox AddOns and reinstalled FF after uninstalling IE 7 as well. Same issue.
