Roadmap for Java 5.0 for Intel Itanium 2 (IA64) platform?

Hi,

I would like to know if there exists a roadmap already for developing an J2SE for the Intel Itanium 2 64bit architecture by Sun? On the Sun download page it still says that this might come eventually in the future (and it isn't supported yet). As the current release 1.4.2_14 has reached the end of its life cycle so far, some of our suppliers are now planning to move towards Java 5.0 and we have absolutely no clue, if this will still be supported on our servers?

The BEA JRE/JDK won't be an alternative to us, as we rely on certified releases issued by Sun itself.

How about running an 32bit J2SE instead? From what I understand, Intel Itanium 2 is not downwards compatible to that? What kind of performance loss would we have to expect by going that way?

Regards,

Felix

If running on HP-UX, you have the HP supported Java JDK/JRE : http://www.hp.com/products1/unix/java/java2/jdkjre5_0/index.htmlBye.RG.

Then you have only BEA JRockit available but ... at the last Javaone, during the Intel keynote, there was a mention that a port to IA64 by Sun maybe possible for the next year. I believe that it's critical for the survival of the Itanium plateform.

Bye,

Real.

Good morning,

I also believe that the release of Java 5.0 is critical for the survival of the Itanium platform. So how about running the 32bit J2SE instead? Would that be downwards compatible? How about possible performance loss? I read something about a different architecture with IA64?

Greetings from Germany,
