password window
Hi gang, I'm a Vista refugee. Time for a change. I just installed my Solaris 10 disc and after rebooting I could only get as far as the password window. The cursor blinks and I tried clicking on it to make shure we were connecting. I'm not allowed to enter in this window. I tried every keyboard trick I knew. It will tell me I entered the wrong user name and password and revert me to the user name window. I am all ears and at your mercy.

Try Ubuntu? Just kidding. Im sorry to hear about your problems.
I hope you are able to get it up and running.
My only advice is this, this is a Java language forum.
I believe Sun must provide a Solaris forum.

Once again, good luck.

FYI: in Solaris, when you type a password, no keyboard input is echoed to the screen. (I.e., you can't tell that you're typing anything. NOTHING shows up. Not an * - nada. The cursor doesn't even move forward.) So - if you are able to enter a username, then you're able to enter a password.
If you are just setting up your system, you probably haven't initialized any users other than "root." Remember the root password that you entered? You'll need that to login the first time (unless, of course, you have already established other users). For the username, type "root" and for the password, enter your root password. Just remember - you're not going to see that anything has been entered. There is no indication what-so-ever.
Oh yeah - when you enter a password, you won't see any keyboard echoing... ;-) (Just thought I'd reiterate that...) And if you're wondering, you're not going to see anything when you enter a password. Ok, I'm done now...

I - personally - will take Solaris over everything else. I've never had a moment's problem with it.... and it's a perfect environment for Java development (can I say, "DTrace?"). I'm not too fond of Java on the different Linux flavors; until recently it hasn't been distributed with the installs. (I also had issues on the only Linux (Mandrake 10) I ever had with java development.)
In other areas - such as C development - I think that Solaris again takes the cake (unless Linux is now distributed with the cc compiler). I'll take cc over gcc any day of the week.
But, again, that's just my opinion.
