SMTP Error 5.1.1 ... User Unknown Error

Hi All,

I have installed Sun Java System Mesaaging Server 2005Q4 version. I have to configure the domain such that it doesnt conflict with the default domain in the organization. Say, if the default domain is abc.com, I have to a create a domain x123.abc.com where x123 will be the hostname.

I am not sure if this is possbile, but when I tried to sent email by making x123.abc.com as my default domain I get the SMTP error 5.1.1 while trying to send the mail.

It would be really helpful if someone could help me.

Thanks & Regards,

Soma.

Do you have an MX and A record for x123.abc.com, does it point to this 2005Q4 machine? Check that DNS is doing what you expect.

Is x123 a hosted domain? E.g. is the domain abc.com also running in this instance of iMS 2005Q4?

Are you addressing the message to user@x123.abc.com?

Are you using smtp auth - if so, are you including the user/password combo as credentials?

More, what is the mail address you're sending to? What is the value you put in LDAP? run:imsimta test -rewrite -debug <user's mail address>and put the results here.

Hi and thanks for the response,

Firstly I am not using MX and x123 will be my host machine where I have installed my Messaging. I am not using smtp auth, I am addressing the message to user@x123.abc.com.

And for Jay,

I tried to send mail from and to the admin user Store.Administrator@s1009.prodapt.com.

I ran the command imsimta and the result is below,

root@s1009 # clear

root@s1009 # ./imsimta test -rewrite -debug Store.Administrator@s1009.prodapt.com

Hi,

Well according to the rewrite output the email should have been accepted (assuming your email client is actually sending to the host that you ran the ./imsimta test -rewrite command on). Make sure you have rebuilt your configuration files before retesting (./imsimta cnbuild; ./imsimta restart).

Then try the following:

telnet s1009.prodapt.com 25

ehlo prodapt.com

mail from: Store.Administrator@s1009.prodapt.com

rcpt to: Store.Administrator@s1009.prodapt.com

If that works (the address is accepted), send the email again using your email client and get the matching log line for the attempt out of your mail.log_current file.

Regards,

Shane.

Hi,

I did a rebuild but still I am getting the same error. telnet also worked showing me the following result,

The following is the information I saw on the http log unfer /opt/SUNWmsgsr/log,

During installtion of Messaging Server before configuring it, the domain address is required, where the installed pickes it from /etc/hosts file. The value was prodapt.com. should tht value be s1009.prodapt.com instead of prodapt.com. Or it doesnt matter.

Here is your problem, sendmail is not sun messaging server.

Shut down and disable sendmail, restart sun messaging server MTA (./imsimta restart) and try again using telnet as per earlier.

What does that mean "not able to send"? What are you using to send the email (webmail/UWC/email client?).

What error do you get?

When you run ./imsimta test -rewrite <address to sent to> what do you get?

Regards,

Shane.

You are missing a bunch of required flags/values, I suggest you refer to the delegated administrator manuals for the correct usage of these commands.

Hi Shane,

Sorry if I had put it wrongly.

I was trying to explain that, I was able to send mail from another account say, somasundaram.r@prodapt.com to store.administrator@s1009.prodapt.com, but when I send from store.administrator@s1009.prodapt.com to somasundaram.r@prodapt.com the email doesnt reach the destination. Now I am able to send and receive from store.administrator@s1009.prodapt.com to store.administrator@s1009.prodapt.com.

I am using the messaging server webmail running on port 80.

Then I ran the command as suggested,

root@s1009 # ./imsimta test -rewrite somasundaram.r@prodapt.com

Hi,

Regarding the delegated admin, the following was the command tht I ran,

./commadmin domain modify -S mail -S cal -H s1009.prodapt.com.

But the error is still Invalid value for login domain, login ID and login password.

I also tried by using -d -n -w options also, but the result is still the same.

REgards,

Soma.

I suspect you have multiple issues.

First, your user's mail address is in the "prodapt.com" domain, yet you're trying to add mail services to a subdomain, "s1009.prodapt.com".These are not the same domain.

If your user is in the "prodapt.com" domain, you should be adding the service to that, not the "machine.domain" subdomain.

the test-rewritte doesn't see the user at all, and believes that the server doesn't even service the domain. It's expecting to send the mail to another server.

Hi,

I agree to your points. But, I wanted to know if there is anyway to configure this scenario. I will be having users under the main domain prodapt.com and also sub domain s1009.prodapt.com.

Currently one of the issues I have is that, I am able to send mails from main domain to the sub-domain and also between users in the sub-domain. I am not able to send mail from the sub-domain to the main domain.

The other issue is when configuring Delegated Admin, the commadmin modfiy domain or commadmin add user commands dont work giving an error saying Invalid admin user id, password and domain. How does the DA find the users under the sub-domain?

Is there a way to confiure this scenario.

Regards,

Soma.
