Set-top box

Dear all,

I'm looking for software developing positions and noticed some of ads mention something like: "developing software on a set-top box".

Does anybody know what "set-top box" mean? Well, I know what does it mean in TV industry, but can not relate it to software development positions...

Thanks.

That could be a position that involves programming cable boxes.

Java skills aren't coming to mind when I think of small electronics programming with extremely limited resources. That is more likely a low-level programming language like C or assembly.

Then again I could be wrong... I am just guessing here.

JavaTV! I think a number of set-top boxes have Java in them.

set-top boxes in software development are the same thing as the TV thing. All that fancy graphics and stuff had to be coded by someone.

Of course, I would love to be able to get into my box and install my own software, as the stuff that comcast pushes into it is just getting worse every month. Freezes, delays... oh, I'm starting to like the simple days of analog systems.

WebTV!? heck no... Is that still around? I meant my Motorola DVR cable box. I want to fix it cuz it freezes all the time. I don't think they understand about threading and deadlock. Or maybe it's a disk I/O problem... I don't know.

I'll be darned, it is: http://www.webtv.com/pc/Scary.
