Sun ultra5 motherboard (375-0115) similar to sun ultra10 motherboard (375-0
Hi,
I have a sun ultra 5 system down because of either motherboard or cpu ( when boot up at graphic level, the screen blank but ok when boot at command-level ie boot -sw).
Looking for the hardware ie motherboard and cpu
Question
-
1) Can the sun ultra 10 motherboard ( 375-0115) be used on the sun
ultra 5 system ( presently motherboard on sun ultra 5 also 375-0115)
Sun handbook indicate different frequency ie
333/360/440MHz (Ultra 10) and 333/360/400MHz (Ultra 5)
Present sun ultra 5 system = 501-5741 (400Mhz module)
Anyone tried this before ?
Much appreciate your sharing .

Hello,
Can the sun ultra 10 motherboard ( 375-0115) be used on the sun
ultra 5 system ?
Sure ! The Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 share the same systemboard. The U10 has a bigger case that allows to fit a UPA framebuffer and the taller 256MB memory modules.
There have been four versions of the U5/U10 systemboard:
375-0009 with only 2MB Video RAM therefore only 8-bit colors.
Starting with 375-0066 the boards have 4MB Video RAM integrated and support 24-bit colors.
Present sun ultra 5 system = 501-5741 (400Mhz module)
375-0115 supports all CPU speeds (270, 300, 333, 400, 440 MHz), maybe the 440MHz module isn't (offically) supported in the Ultra 5 due to cooling issues (the U5 front fan is smaller than the one of the U10). According to the SPARCengine UltraAXi OEM Manual the power consumption of the 333MHz/2MB (501-5090) module with pin-grid heatsink is higher than the one of the 440MHz/2MB (501-5149) with straight-fin heatsink.
