Do you plan to study for more than 3 months? That's plenty of time.
core java is enough for SCJP. all u need to do is study from the scratch. select each topic at 1's and look at that topics in all possible ways(theoriticallu and programatically). if u dont get much time to read, take time for writing scjp until u r confident enough.K&B is the good book for scjp.
I have found that java is 1/2 to 3/4 the exam. the rest is learning to take the questions. After passing SCJO (1.2 and 5), BCD, WCD, JWSD each exam has thier own style. I have found practice exams from sun and whizlabs to be very valuable in gauging when I am ready to take the exam.
I have found the Whizlabs practice exam to usually be much harder than the real exam. While the sun practice exam is at the same level as the real exam. I also have found that the only sun practice exam, that if answered wrong, could have made the difference between passing and not.
As a rule I don't take an exam unless I pass at least 2 simulators.
