Plug and Play sound devices

Hello,

I am not even up to "New to Solaris Development" level yet. I havent even touched a solaris machine, yet it is my task to figure out a way to test a plug and play USB audio device on a Solaris 9/10 system.

The systems we are using are Sun V210s with either Solaris 9 or 10 preinstalled. (not exactly sure yet) They haven't even been turned on so I really don't know what to expect.

I have a sony USB audio device which contains a stereo speaker device with a usb cable. It supports USB spec 1.0 and when plugged into a Windows machine, it is recognized immediately as an audio device and you can select it in the "playback" devices window. This seems easy.

Now, I believe that solaris has support for USB spec 1.0 devices. What would happen if I plug this speaker into the USB port? Would solaris "recognize" it in any way? If not, what do I need to do?

Lastly, If I did get it recognized, is there a simple way to test it with an audio file, or even just some simple 'beeps' ?

Thank you very much,

Marcus

Hello,

So I was able to get my hands on a Solaris machine to test this out. I dont even know what version of Solaris it is actually. But it worked fine. I ran the audioplay command with no parameters and It gave an error "cannot open stat /dev/audio ..." or something, which made sense cause there was no audio device. So I try plugging in the usb speaker. After the power light on the speaker turned on I tried the command again. Nothing happened. No errors! Then I tried playing a wav file, and it was music to my ears, lol. It worked. Anyway, thats all.

Thanks,

Marcus
