Configuring and Setup for Total Newbie

Hi

Yep the title says it all. That is what I am after, some good education that has plain english explanation and easy step by step guide to help understand and use solaris 10.

Yes I have googled for help. Most of the results are for learning: "How to use Solaris"post set up.

However, I can't even use Solaris if I haven't even installed it properly. That is my biggest problem now. I want more support. I am willing to sit down and put in the time to learn it. But if there is insufficient materials to teach beginners about it, we are all going to stick with windows. It's a shame.

I have persisted on sun.com website for help and reading the forum. The site is huge! I get lost in it.

The forum response is slow. And the response seems to be targeted towards advance users or at least someone who has sound knowledge into computing.

Other solaris forum, like OpenSolaris is similar to this one... Going to other unix forum can be worse. Someone has barely any activities in it. And someone have replies that is very brief and concise that I don't understand.

I feel really at lost with this. Where do I go to find help that is appropriate to my level?

It's ironic that sun claims that Solaris 10 is the most advance OS on the planet. And yet most of us like myself who want to use it, but can't, and thus have to end up using Windows.

Start by asking SPECIFIC QUESTIONS.

What exactly did you do to try and install Solaris?

What exactly happened after you tried?

Did the CD install freeze in the middle? ...or did it complete but some devices won't work properly?

Ask specific questions and you will get at least some answers.

I am not after specific instruction for specific purpose. That is a waste of time. Yes, if there is a specific problem then I will need to specify my computer details and the actions I have took.

Say if I want to install a network card on Windows, usually I just stick the card onto the motherboard, boot up again. Insert the driver CD. Windows will prompt me about installing it, or I can just double click on the network card driver *.exe file to start installing it.

To configure the settings, I follow go into control panel, double click on networking and follow the prompts there.

With these steps, it's generic, sure you'd adjust to suit the situation, but it's pretty standard procedures.

I don't even know the standard procedure for solaris -- it's like talking to a dead computer. I just don't know what to do. I mean there are no more *.exe file to start something, what do I do?

I don't even understand the filesystem. For windows, I know the various folders. For example, "Program Files" is where I normally put all the various programs I install. "Windows" folder is there all the basic Windows OS utilities and files go in. 'Documents and Settings" is where my I put all my word and excel etc files in.

What I am after is basic administration understanding of Solaris. I have book on how to use shell, like ls, cp, man, cat etc... But that is not enough.

You can click around blind on a Windows box, or you can click around blind on a Unix box, your choice.

You could easily go to a bookstore and pick up some books on Unix. There should be a few to choose from.

The Java Desktop System has .pdf's on docs.sun.com

I have a link to basic documentation at:

http://www.ilkda.com/

look under New to Unix.
