I want to replace a failed CPU but cannot remove it from the heatsink. Any suggestions?

Hello,

please review the "Heatsink Field Replaceable Unit

Installation Guide"

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-4048-13?l=en&q=817-4048

The "Sun Fire V210 and V240 Servers Parts Replacement Manual" (817-0743-10) wasn't locatable on docs.sun.com ...

That manual says nothing about a cpu stuck to the heatsink.

I'm assuming you've removed the heatsink from the motherboard, and the CPU came along with it? If so, you may have damaged the pins on the CPU.

At the risk of sounding cavalier, you'll have to somehow pry the CPU from the heatsink. There is a special grease between the CPU to and the heatsink. Over time, the grease hardens and the heatsink and CPU stay together. I'd be very hesitant to use anything but gentle persuasion to move the CPU side to side to try to break the lock to the heatsink.

The manual states the CPU is replaced WITH the motherboard. But if you need to replace the heatsink / Fan:- Slide the heatsink assembly to release the front clips.- Lift the CPU heatsink up and away from the CPU.
