Old server comparison

I'm currently running Oracle9i on a E4500, 4x400MHz processors, 2GB RAM, with 2 A1000 arrays. CPU utilization tends to be very low, typically 65-85% idle.I also have a Sunfire 280R, 1 900MHz processor, also 2GB RAM. If I moved the Oracle database to this server, would I see an impact on performance? (In each case, the Oracle database is basically the only thing running on the box) Will the A1000 work with the 280R?

Thanks,

Harry

Harry:

From the limited perspective of a hardware person, only ...

Yes, the database will run on the newer platform.

Yes the array(s) will work, Solaris 9 or Solaris 8, but not if you choose Solaris 10.

I anticipate the cpu idle status will not be quite so free, however.

Still fine, but not quite so idle.

You'll be going from four cpu cores to one cpu core,

albeit the newer 280R module is essentially twice as speedy as the E4500 processors.

Your internal data bus speed will go from 100MHz to 150MHz.

That gives you better throughput from cpu/RAM to the filesystems and to the network.

I might guess you'd essentially perceive it as an E4500 with two procs and 2GB of RAM.

Having said all that, and freely admitting that I've never needed to do any database tuning,

you're probably going to make out just fine.

I've sensed from reading your forum postings over the years in the old hardware foums and in these merged forums,

that you have a handle on exactly what to do.It'll be fine.

That 280R has room for upgrades, will consume far less electricity,

and will take up a lot less space in the datacenter.

Go for it. Load it up.Set up a script of some kind for a continuous read/write "burn-in" test.

Observe what happens, and cut it over to production when you're comfortable with it.

Thanks for the reply. Will I need to reformat the LUNS and file systems on the A1000?Thanks,Harry

I suspect they'll be fine, but I've never had the need to doanything beyond absolute fresh installs, ever.Let's wait for others with recent hands-on storage experience to jump in here.
