SparcStation2 not booting

We have a SparcStation2 running SunOS 4.1.3, recently had CPU board replaced and since then have had problems. We are able to ping it but not telnet to it. It reported a filesystem inconsistency on /usr, we fsck'ed it and it repaired several faulty superblocks and were able to shutdown and reboot ok. Server was ok for a day and then we were unable to telnet to it again. Console reported a panic data fault syncing filesystems. We tried rebooting server again but got unexpected inconsistency on /dev/rsd7E (U1) Reboot failed Help!!!!

Has anybody come across this before and how do we fix it?

it's been ....

all of perhaps 9+ years since I was in the same room with one of those systems.

(they went EOSL in 1999)

I can only make suggestions.

The SPARCstation2 system ( a.k.a. Sun 4/75 ) is an interesting beast.

Congratulations on keeping it running as long as you have.

Can you get it to OBP?

... that would mean that the cpu and RAM pass POST.

Can you boot it from external media ( tape? network? CD ? )

.... that would suggest the SCSI chipset is fine.

" unexpected inconsistency on /dev/rsd7E " still suggests that a filesystem needs serious FSCK maintenance.

Perhaps there is some component that needs to be reseated after your repair.

Loose SCSI cable?

A hard drive that is failing beyond the ability to hold a filesystem?

Re-seat all SIMMs ?

Power supply connectors all attached tightly ?

Power supply cooling fan functioning properly ?

Cooling fan that is near the floppy drive working properly?

Your only recourse may be to reinstall the OS and restore your data from your backups.

Yep, definitely try reseating everything, but it does sound like a failing hard drive to me :-(I've also got a SparcStation2 :-) 40mhz, 96MB RAM, but now with a 4.3GB HD stuffed in it, running NetBSD :-)
