can you run netbeans off of a flash drive anywhere (like eclipse or jcreator?)
I know the tar.gz file for Linux can do that, but I'm not sure of the other platforms.

As long as all of the files NB needs are available it should work. You may have to specify some startup command parameters (or pre-deploy some files) since NB uses/creates unique parameter/property files. It does not require any Registry entries on Windows.
