Short of putting windows where it belongs - in the shitter - you can check out these sites: http://weblogs.java.net/blog/chet/archive/2006/10/java_on_vista_y.html http://ogasawalrus.com/blog/node/38 http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2006/10/11/java_windows_vista/

Only one thing that annoys me more than crossposters, people who make a reply after they have been told that this is a crosspost and have been provided a link to the thread where they should make the reply. So now we have to read both threads to see the suggested solutions.

Actually, this was the original thread. Posted at 8:18 PM local time. The other - the one which you provided a link for - was the crosspost, posted two minutes later.

If you can run Vista, you are 99.9% guaranteed to be able to run just about any flavor of Linux or - better yet - Solaris. (In my experience, Solaris has been a bit more solid in terms of stability - but I haven't played with linux in about a year.)

For linux, I have tried SuSE, Ubuntu, Mandrake and Mandriva (formerly mandrake). All worked well for me.

(And I was just giving you a hard time about Windows... don't take any of that to heart. It's a lot of work to dual-boot a machine just to run java when the support is already there on the original/native o/s.)

But the other thread already had a reply. Therefore my intention was to direct everybody to it so they could continue the discussion. Not here.

Seems like the support is not there on the native os however. Every time I try to install Java 6SE it fails. Is it because i have Vista Home Basic?
