Market Research for JAVA - UK based question

Hi, apologies if this is out of place, but my current employer is looking to switch from a Microsoft platform to Java platform, and I have been tasked with finding out some info and was hoping I might get some rapid assistance on here.

Can anyone therefore give me an idea of the approx cost of acheiving Sun certification in Java?

Does anybody know, roughly, the size of the JAVA community in the UK (and therefore how many candidates might be available to my employer). My feeling is that there are more C# programmers in the UK currently?

Can anyone give me an idea why this disparity exists, if indeed it does?

Any pointers to other useful websites gratefully received,

thanks

The gap between C# and Java isn't that huge. I don't live in the UK, so I cannot answer your question. The reason you feel that there are more C# developers is because that's your domain and so those are the people you work with most often. I think that if you open a vacancy for Java developers, you'll get a lot of response.

The fact that a developer is certified doesn't guarantee that you're dealing with a good developer. From what I've seen in this forum, there are a lot of certified programmers with crappy skills and uncertified programmers who'll do better than most of who are certified.

For more info on certification: http://www.sun.com/training/certification/java/index.xml

Good luck with your quest!

In the UK, there are roughly 3.1415 times as many C# developers as there are Java developers.

People sometimes associate Java developers with a large male community generally active in San Fransisco and/or Amsterdam. This may have something to do with it.
